The Old High School Building, Built 1914

A wonderful friend shared a post on Facebook.  The content read:

 “I’m old school.  I believe in having good manners, respecting my elders, and helping others when I can. Are you old school too?”

My first thought was to add an “Amen” and maybe share it.  But then I hesitated and considered the principles the poster endorsed.

That’s when I realized that actually, I prefer to view those values as eternal.

John the Beloved wrote in 1 John 4:8, “…God is Love”.  This means Love created the world; we are created in His image.  Therefore,

  • showing approachability
  • communicating and interacting with genuine interest
  • demonstrating kindness;
  • honoring the older generation, respecting and embracing their wisdom and experiences;
  • and serving others–no matter their race, creed, color, gender, and age—

have their origins in Love.  Walking in Love, and all that it comprises, is therefore timeless.  Valuing others is before “Old School”—it is eternal.
